My nursing career has been devoted solely to psychiatric nursing and I have been with The Menninger Clinic since I was 23 years old!  I knew that I would be going in to psychiatry when, as a nursing student, I was berated for sitting and talking with a patient. It’s now been 20 years and I’m still excited to come to work.

How many people can say that their job assists others to live their lives to the fullest? Some days are stressful, but there is always a reward at the end. For a patient to simply say “thank you, you have helped enhance my life,” is a feeling like no other.

For those nurses wanting a career in psychiatry, I would support this choice whole-heartedly. No matter where you work, you will be providing psychiatric nursing during every interaction.

The team work at Menninger is superb! Our team consists of not only the doctors, nurses, mental health associates and primary clinicians, but all of The Clinic’s staff. One never knows who a patient will connect with and it’s vital to realize that all of us have an impact on the patients and one another.

I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
